Denovali records are one of my very favourite distros on the internet. They specialise mainly in hardcore and they tend to put a lot of their releases up for free download, as well as selling them on cd and vinyl. With Kidcrash however, they've done something even more crazy. Kidcrash themselves say:
"we ask that you make a $5 donation in support of helping us continue to afford to make new records and tour, but obviously our music is and must always be available to anyone who wants it regardless of an ability or a desire to make a donation; knowing as artists that: in the process of creating we produce works that by definition are the property of society, not the artist."
I do have to admit that I haven't heard all of these releases. But Kidcrash released what is now my favourite album of 2007 and a record I constantly come back to even now, Jokes. Jokes is almost like every great emo band wrapped into one, or at least a microcosm of that sort of hardcore. On top of that it is really accessible, not difficult at all to listen to because it's catchy and the songs are pretty short. The vocals aren't overly raw and the production is very good. Basically, it's the best hardcore record since Daitro's Lassiez Vivre Les Squelettes or Gospel's The Moon is a Dead World.
Ultimately, this is the best thing to happen to legally free music in a long time. Well, that and Off Minor's new album Some Blood, but I'll save that for another post.
PS I'm an idiot for writing this, it's 6:40 in the morning and I have to leave right now.
